ORTHODONTICS

WHAT IS ORTHODONTICS?

Orthodontic treatments perform gentle movements that move the teeth individually or in blocks and correct their placement. They have the double objective of achieving a good occlusion and a correct alignment of the teeth. In this way aesthetic and functional benefits are obtained.

ORTHODONTICS IN CHILDREN

They should go to the orthodontic specialist as soon as their first definitive teeth come out. Many parents have doubts about when to start an orthodontic treatment. Starting at an early age does not mean ending earlier. Today we do efficient treatments. They are the least cases treated around six years of age. However, at an early age we can intervene in the growth and development of the child performing dentofacial orthopedics if it is necessary to improve the bone bases to house the teeth and even avoid skeletal discrepancies. The advantage of early treatment is to avoid skeletal malformations that would become apparent in the adult and would lead to possible growth deviations, facial asymmetries, muscle aches, joints ... Simple and favorable treatments in the child often avoid complex treatments in the adult such as dental extractions and orthognathic surgery. At this age it is very important to detect functional problems (digital suction, atypical swallowing ..) Some of the malocclusions that can benefit from early treatment are cross bite, open bite, classes II, classes III and habits.

ORTHODONTICS IN ADOLESCENTS

It is the ideal age to correct the teeth and get an ideal smile. Around twelve years the tooth replacement is usually finished. As patients are still growing at this age, some dentofacial orthopedic treatments can still be performed.

ADULT ORTHODONTICS

This age group is perhaps the bulk of our activity today. Not only because we have fast treatments that allow us to achieve excellent dental aesthetics in a short time, but also because of the interrelation of orthodontics with other dental specialties. Thanks to the low friction orthodontic systems, treatment times have been shortened with optimal results. We have highly aesthetic orthodontic systems such as Invisalign that allow you to lead a normal life during treatment. When we have alterations in bone bases in adulthood, the treatment of choice is orthodontics in combination with orthognathic surgery. Most dental aesthetic treatment plans include orthodontic treatment as part of it. Prior to dental reconstructions after trauma, in treatments with dental veneers or covers, in cases of gingival smile (excessive exposure of the gum), periodontal plastic surgery (reconfigured of the gum so that the frame of the teeth is homogeneous and symmetrical), ... Orthodontics significantly improves periodontal (periodontal or pyorrhea) and occlusal problems by improving the intraosseous dental proportion. In rehabilitative treatments through dental implants, orthodontics allows the correct distribution of spaces for their placement. Orthodontics is also used as an adjunctive treatment in sleep problems.

ORTHODONTICS IN PREGNANT

Being pregnant and wearing orthodontics is perfectly compatible, since orthodontic techniques have no negative effect on pregnancy. However, due to the hormonal changes produced during the gestation period (increase in estrogen and progesterone levels) it is common to develop gingivitis. Gingival inflammation, redness and swelling of the gums that cause special care to control bacterial plaque. Inflammatory changes can be minimized with good dental hygiene and proper alignment of the teeth. This makes pregnancy another time to consider starting an orthodontic treatment. “We have the best orthodontic system for pregnant women.” It is a removable, highly aesthetic orthodontic system and does not require previous radiographs. The control visits are widely spaced, every 4 or 6 weeks, short and are carried out in a semi-comfortable position for a patient in this state.

PHASES OF TREATMENT WITH ORTHODONTICS

Our team will be available to answer any questions before, during and after the treatment

Orthodontic study

Before starting your treatment, your orthodontist will perform a previous orthodontic study, which includes taking impressions for models and x-rays for the study of teeth and bone, so that a diagnosis can be established as accurately as possible. Based on the information obtained, it will work to define the 100% personalized treatment plan that best suits your needs.

Placement

A first consultation will be necessary to place the brackets and the rest of the elements that make up the orthodontics, including the arches and elastic bands.

Review and supervision

A series of reviews will be scheduled, usually monthly, where the progress achieved will be monitored and the placement of the brackets, bows and rubber bands will be modified if necessary.

Withdrawal

When the planned objective has been reached, the arches, rubber bands and brackets will be removed and the adhesive cement will be removed by gentle cleaning.

End of treatment

Once the braces have been removed, it will be necessary to place a restraint. This can be fixed, through a metal wire at the back of the teeth or removable, through a transparent splint that will be placed at night. Thus, the result of orthodontics will be maintained.
